Compare two fractions with the same

numerator or the same denominator by
reasoning about their size. Recognize that
comparisons are valid only when the two
fractions refer to the same whole. Record
the results of comparisons with the symbols
< , > , = and justify the conclusions by using
a visual fraction model.

Vocabulary

 Numerator: is what goes on top

of the fraction and refers to the
part of the whole we are
describing.

 Equivalent: a fancy word for

equal. When equivalent fractions
are shown that means they take
up the same amount of space in a
model.

 Denominator: refers to our total

or our whole
