Napoleon's Rise to Power

Napoleon had a respected reputation as a military officer during the French
Revolution, successfully winning in an invasion against Italy. And even though he
failed to seize Egypt, Napoleon was welcomed in France as a hero. Napoleon
slowly gained power and with his allies he was able to overthrow the French
Directory government by a coup d'etat on November 9th, 1799. Napoleon was
confirmed as power by the new Constitution of 1799.

Napoleon's Rise to Power

The impact of Napoleon's rise resulted in:

The creation of the first French Empire

The abolishment of laws and policies that had existed in France and
established the Napoleonic code.

These laws included feudalism, privileges based on birth, and social
inequity.

Multiple battles won which ended in most of Europe either part of the French
Empire, controlled by France, or allied to it by treaty.

Nationalism during Napoleon´s era

Napoleon promoted French Nationalism based upon the ideals of the French
Revolution like “liberty, equality and fraternity”.

Napoleon believed he had a right to spread his enlightenment ideas of the
Revolution across Europe.

During Napoleon's spread to other nations, he disallowed and destroyed
many of their individual cultures and people of these nations greatly
resented this.

This resulted in a new nationalism in occupied nations, mainly in Germany
and Italy, at a level that had not previously existed.

Nationalism during Napoleon´s era

Nationalism was important to Napoleon´s rule as he needed to keep his French
citizens loyal so he can still be in power and continue to spread his influences
throughout Europe. However Nationalism would also be his downfall because his
enemies would bring out a nationalistic impulse that would increase as more
were being conquered by Napoleon.
