We already know...

Figurative language

Writers use figurative language as a creative way to express thoughts and feelings.

We use figurative language to compare, exaggerate, and to describe.

Similes are when we compare 2 subjects by saying one is LIKE the other or AS adjective AS the other.

She is like a ray of light!

They are as fast as cheetahs.

Simile

Metaphors also compare 2 subjects, but they are compared by sayin one IS the other.

My brain is a tornado.

He was a monster when he lost the game!

This type of figurative language exaggerates or stretches the truth. Writers do this to get their point across.

This is a phrase that was created, but we do not take it seriously. This phrase does not mean what it says.

"Let the cat out of the bag" actually means do not reveal a secret.

​​Idiom

When the same beginning sound (not word!) gets repeated throughout a line or paragraph, this is alliteration.

The most common alliteration we know are tongue twisters!

This is when a word that describes a sound actually SOUNDS like it! We see these most commonly in comic books.
