“Disaster Risk Reduction”
the concept and practice of reducing disaster risks through systematic efforts to analyze and manage the causal factors of disasters, including through reduced exposures to hazards, lessened vulnerability of people and property, wise management of land and the environment, and improved preparedness for adverse events.

In 1999, then UN Secretary-General Kofi Annan wrote, "one of the most pressing challenges of our time [is] the extraordinary increase in the number and extent of natural disasters.”

What is World Risk Index?
It is released by the United Nations University Institute for Environment and Human Security (UNU-EHS), Bundnis Entwicklung Hilft and the University of Stuttgart in Germany.

It is calculated per country as the geometric mean of exposure and vulnerability.
