Just because we aren’t physically in an art studio at this very moment doesn’t mean we can’t learn all about art as if we were! In this unit, we will gather all of the information we can about creating art as if we were in an actual studio. We will explore different types of genres and styles that many artists use and learn about the differences between representational and abstract art. We may not be stepping into an art studio to do this work, but we sure will step into a digital one! Let’s get started!

Lesson 1 - Finding inspiration
All artists have different things that inspire them. This could be anything under the sun. It could be a mood they are in or a feeling they are having. It could be something they saw with their own eyes or something they’ve heard about. It could be an animal that they love or a special person who is a part of their life. It could be a book they read or a lesson they recently learned. It could be a song that was just played or an adventure that took them to new places. There are so many things that inspire artists to create artwork.

Still life is a drawing and/or painting of different objects which are arranged together and viewed from one specific viewpoint. Most of the time, these items are inanimate objects, like fruit, flowers, dishes, glasses, vases, furniture, etc.
Still life
Representational Art is art that represents objects or events as they are seen in the real world. Still life, portrait, landscape/seascape, and history painting are all types of representational art. They all show things exactly how we would see them, or how they really are.

When creating an arrangement of objects for a still life drawing, it’s great to use objects with different sizes, textures, shapes, and things of that nature. It’s like you’re creating a scene with these objects, and that scene is being frozen in time. Those objects don’t move and neither do you.

When drawing or painting a still life, artists use many different techniques to draw things just as they are seeing them. They use shading to capture exactly how the light is hitting the objects. They use different line strokes to create the different textures on each one of the objects. They create an identical image of what they see in regards to the arrangement. Of course, not all works of art are completed in one day. Sometimes, an artist needs to take a break from their drawing and come back to it. This is completely fine, but it’s important to remember that with still life your location is important. Make sure that when you return, you sit in the exact same spot you were before, so the lighting and viewpoint are the exact same and do not change in your drawing.
