Radicals

The most common radicals are also some of the most ancient
characters.

A radical is how Chinese characters are classified or grouped.

They give us clues as to the meaning or pronunciation of the
entire character.

Example:

This character has “roof/cover (mian)” and “woman (nu)” (宀
,女)Together, they make the character 'an' which is part of the word for “safe.”

Today, this character is used in the phrases 安宁,安全 both
mean peace or peaceful.

What do you think this character might mean?

Tones

There are 4 main tones in Chinese.

First tone: high and flat.

Second tone: rising

Third tone: longer, falling then rising

Fourth tone: short, falling

Using tone marks over pinyin words is
how we will “read” this semester.

妈妈骑马慢,妈妈骂马

Mā mā qí mǎ, mǎ màn, mā mā mà mǎ.

Mother rides a horse. The horse is slow. Mother scolds
the horse.

17
