Music Reading Basics

Bar Line- A single vertical line used to divide a musical staff into measure

Double Bar Line- Two vertical lines that separate principal sections of a musical comp.

Repeat Sign- A sign that signifies a section be repeated

Measure- A group of notes that has a length determined by the time signature

Breath Mark- A comma placed between two notes close to the top of the staff that indicate to take a breath or small pause.

Time Signature- Shows the number of beats per measure and the type of note that is equal to one beat

Key Signature- The arrangement of sharps or flats on particular lines or spaces of a musical staff to indicate that the corresponding note in every octave are to be consistently raised or lowered from their natural pitches.

Major Key Signatures

Sharp- The note above the last sharp to the right names the key

Flat- The second to last flat to the right names the key

Exception 1- C is Clear. Key of C will display no sharps or flats.

Exception 2- F only has one flat.
