What do horses need?

​As a general rule, horses need:

• Access to clean water

• Access to grass and/or hay at all times

• Lots of room to move around

• A shelter (anything safe, from a stable to a shed) that is properly ventilated

Horse Colors

These next slides are going to be about horse colors. The last slide will teach you how these colors differ to each other (which ones are dominant and recessive) with foals.

​This is a palomino

Palomino horses can have very rich golden coats like the horse on the left, or have more toned-down, creamy coats like the horse on the right. But they will always sport a touch of golden. Usually they will have white markings and/or a white mane and tail.

​This is a chestnut

Chestnuts have brown coats, sometimes with a bit of a copper sheen like the horse on the left, or just plain brown like the horse on the right.

This is a gray

Gray horses can come with many different coat patterns. They can be dapple gray like the horse on the left, or pure solid gray like the horse on the right.

Appaloosas - spotted horses - are very beautiful, and no two are exactly alike! The background color can be any color, as shown in these pictures.

​Palomino isn't really a color; it's a breed. However, to produce a palmino foal, one parent must be palomino and one must be chestnut!

Palomino

Chestnut is the most recessive color. Ex: A chestnut mare and a black stallion will usually produce a black foal.

​Gray is the most dominant color. Ex: A gray mare and a palomino stallion will produce a gray foal.

​Black is recessive towards gray but dominant towards chestnut. Ex: A black mare and gray stallion should produce a gray foal.
