Key Concept 1:

Weather is the combination of sunlight, wind, snow or
rain, and temperature in a particular region at a
particular time. People measure these conditions to
describe and record the weather and to notice patterns
over time.

2

media

wind speed- the measurement of how fast the air is moving and is
measured by an anemometer.

wind direction- the direction from which the wind is blowing and is
measured by a wind vane, flag, or windsocks.

precipitation - water that falls to the ground as rain, snow, etc. and
is measured by a rain gauge.

temperature - a measurement that indicates how hot or cold
something is : a measurement in degrees showing the heat of
something (such as air or water) and is measured by a thermometer

air pressure - the weight of air molecules pressing down on the
Earth and is measured by a barometer.

3

media

Key Concept 2:

Patterns of weather can be predicted from
weather data collected through observations
and measurements.

4

media

Sub Concept 1: We can collect and compare weather data in
order to predict the likelihood of a particular weather condition
occurring.

Sub Concept 2: Reading basic weather instruments including
thermometers, barometers, anemometers, wind vanes, and rain
gauges helps us to collect data to predict weather patterns.

Sub Concept 3: Topredict weather patterns, we identify or
observe weather conditions in the atmosphere or the air that
surrounds our Earth.

1

anemometer, wind vane, thermometer

Key Concept 4:

An air mass is a body of air with the same
temperature, humidity (the amount of moisture
in the air, the higher the humidity the more
moisture is in the air), and pressure.

14

media

Sub Concept 1: The air pressure of an air mass is measured with a barometer to predict
weather.

Sub Concept 2: The borderline between two air masses is called a front and can be
associated with predictable weather patterns.

Sub Concept 3: A cold front is the leading edge of a cooler air mass and where the
colder air mass replaces a warmer air mass.

Sub Concept 4: When colder air replaces warm air, a line of showers and
thunderstorms can form when enough moisture is present.

Sub Concept 5: The air behind a cold front is cooler and drier than the air ahead of it.
When a cold front passes by an area, the temperature will decrease.

Sub Concept 6: A warm front is the leading edge of a warm air mass and where the
warmer air mass replaces a cooler air mass.

Sub Concept 7: When warmer air replaces cooler air, temperatures will increase and
heavy rain can fall in an area.

Which front is this

1

Cold front

2

Warm front

3

Occluded front

4

Stationary front

16

Question image

Which front is this

1

Cold front

2

Warm front

3

Occluded front

4

Stationary front

17

Multiple Choice

The weather that a cold front brings is ___

1

thunderstorms

2

clear skies

3

puffy white clouds

18

Multiple Choice

As a warm front passes through an area, what is the weather like?

1

Bright and sunny and then colder than it was before

2

Cloudy or rainy and then warmer than it was before

3

4

Key Concept 5:

Global weather patterns impact local weather
conditions in measurable terms such as temperature,
wind direction, wind speed, and precipitation.

21

media

Sub Concept 1: Global weather patterns include air and water currents
that have a powerful influence on weather conditions in the atmosphere.
(A current is a continuous movement of water or air in the same
direction.)

Sub Concept 2: The jet stream is a strong air current in the upper
atmosphere and is located over North America. It flows from the west to
the east and changes location (to the north or to the south) depending on
global conditions.

Sub Concept 3:The Gulf stream is a strong, warm surface current in
the North Atlantic Ocean. It moves from south of Florida up the eastern
seaboard and then across the Atlantic. It moderates (or influences)
weather by warming the air and land along the eastern seaboard during
the cooler months.

22

Multiple Choice

How does the jet stream affect the weather?
1

The jet stream transports weather systems that affect us.

2

The jet stream does not affect the weather.

3

The jet stream releases oxygen so we can breathe.

4

The jet stream brings only bad weather.

23

Multiple Choice

Question image

What will most likely result when the jet stream moves south of North

Carolina?

1

North Carolina will experience tropical weather conditions.

2

North Carolina will experience hot, dry weather.

3

North Carolina will experience mild weather.

4

North Carolina will experience cold weather.
