Creating a Text Entry Assignment in Canvas

2

To create a text entry assignment:

  1. Go to the Assignments tab in the left course menu.

  2. Click on +Assignment in the top right corner of the page.

3

This is where you will set up the assignment.

  1. Give the assignment a title under Assignment Name.

  2. The space below the title is called the Rich Content Editor. This is where you can add directions to the student, as well as links and images. For the purposes of this course, we will only be adding directions.

Scroll down and continue:

  • Points: Assign the point value you want for this assignment.

  • Assignment Group: Remember, this is the Skyward category you want the grade to fall under once it syncs. This is an IMPORTANT step. Don't skip it! Click the drop down menu and select the assignment group you want to use.

  • Display Grade as: Leave this as Points. You will learn more about the options in another module.

  • Submission Type: This is where you can choose the way students will submit their work. For this assignment, we are going to check the Text Entry box.

5

  • Submission Attempts: You can limit the number of times students can redo the assignment. The default is unlimited attempts. If you want to add a limit, click the drop down, select Limit, and enter the number of attempts students will have.

  • Group Assignment: Leave this unchecked. You will learn about group assignments in a later module.

  • Peer Reviews: Leave this unchecked. You will learn about peer reviews in a later module.

  • Sync to SIS: Check this box if you want grades from this assignment to be able to sync with Skyward.

6

  • Assign to: The default for this is Everyone. For now, leave this section as it is. You will learn about making changes to this in a later module.

  • Due: You must have a due date in order for the assignment to sync with Skyward. You can change this later if needed but it is required.

  • Available from & Until: Do NOT add dates here. We will learn about Available from & Until dates in a later module.

7

  • Once you have completely set up your assignment, click Save (at the bottom).

  • Do not publish yet. This way you can ensure you have it set up correctly before students work on it.

8

How do I publish the assignment for students once it's ready?

Try one of the following:

  1. (Easiest) Go to the Assignments tab and click the 🚫 symbol to the right of the assignment title. This will change it to a green check mark, indicating it has been published.

  2. Go to the Assignments tab, click on the assignment title, and click Edit. Then choose Save & Publish at the bottom of the screen.

  3. Once you have created modules (which we will learn to do in a later section of this course), you can publish directly from the module, similarly to how you did in the Assignments tab.

9

What will students see and turn in?

Students will see a Start Assignment button on the assignment page.

  • We will learn about grading assignments in another module!
