Motivation:

What is a research design? Similar to building a house, a
research design is your guide for you to finish your
research. This may include answering the 5Ws:

What?

How?

Who?

Where?

When?

Presenting Examples

Directions:

Practical research methodology is a systematic approach to conducting
research that aims to provide practical solutions to real-world problems. It
involves the use of various research methods and techniques to collect and
analyze data, and to draw conclusions based on the findings. The goal of
practical research methodology is to produce results that are useful and
applicable in real-life situations.

Activity: Describe it! Each group should have 1 representative.

Directions:

Before proceeding with your observation and interview, you need to make a communication letter to

the community where you plan to gather the data.

Designing a Practical Research Study Designing a practical research study involves several key steps,
including defining the research question, selecting a research design, choosing a sampling strategy, and
developing a data collection plan. The research question should be clear and specific, and should guide
the selection of the research designand other aspects of the study. The research design should be chosen
based on the research questionand the type of datathat will be collected. Choosing a sampling strategy
involves determining the populationto be studied and selecting a sample that is representative of that
population. Finally, developing a data collection plan involves selecting appropriate methods for collecting
data, such as surveys, interviews, or observations, and ensuring that the data is collected in a
consistent and reliable manner.

Finding Practical Application of Concepts

What’s More
Activity 1
Read the following scenarios and decide whether observation or interview is a more appropriate data collection method for
each.
___________ 1. Teacher Annie wants to know about the problems that the parents of her
Grade 2 students may be experiencing now that learning happens at home.
___________ 2. Armin, a student in SHS-Sports Track, wants to know how a five-time
champion university basketball team trains and practices for a championship match.
___________ 3. Helena, an ABM student, wants to find out the different interactions and
communications that happen among bosses and employees during a business meeting.
___________ 4. As a part of their investigatory project, Andre and his classmates need to find
out the effects of an organic, all-natural feeds, made from leftover food to a group of chickens.
He will compare these chickens to another group which is eating feeds bought from the
market.
___________ 5. Yumi, a Grade 11 Arts and Design student, wants to know about the
inspirations behind the artworks of a local artist and how this artist feels about Filipino arts.

1. The steps that I have learned on making observations are:

2. To establish a good relationship with my interview participants, I should:

Note: it is important to ask permission to who is in-charge of a particular place
where you will conduct your observation. Some place may not allow you to take
pictures or record videos, therefore, it is important to make a formal letter to avoid
unnecessary problems.

Making Generalizations and Abstractions about the Lesson

Directions:

How do we conduct a proper interview and observations?

• Have the right equipment. Make sure that you have audio recording devices that are fully charged. You cannot take note of every answer
of the participants so it’s better to have devices that can record the exact answer of your participant.

• Let the participant choose where they want the interview or observation to be conducted.

• Politely thank the participants afterwards.

How to establish a good relationship and communication with your participants?

• Treat your participants with respect.

• Wear proper and formal outfit during the interview.

• Do not be afraid to engage in a conversation with your participant.

• Do not ask personal questions that are not related to your research.

• Do not forget to thank them for their time and participation.
