Some of the oldest art known to man can be found lining the ceilings and walls of caves around the world. These paintings can be dated all the way back to prehistoric times. Cave paintings are also known as parietal art. The most commonly found types of parietal art are hand stencils and animal paintings.

Hand stencils
Hand stencils are believed to be some of the oldest forms of artwork.
In fact, hand stencils found in Spain and Indonesia date back almost 40,000 years! To put that into perspective, America as a country is only 240 years old (it turns 241 on July 4th of 2017). So these hand stencils are more than 150 times the age of the United States of America!

How were these created?

Parietal Art: Animal Paintings
It appears that animals were painted onto the walls and ceilings of these caves using what seems to be a few certain steps. First, the outline of the animal was drawn. This would be done either by using a sharp stone to scratch the surface or by using something like charcoal. The image was then filled in with pigments (or substances used as coloring) created from crushed minerals. These crushed minerals created a powder that was then combined with something like water or animal fat creating a consistency like paint, which added color.

Paint like an Egyptian
Almost without exception, the head is represented from a side view in a stark outline.
Normally in a profile image, only half the eye is seen. In an Egyptian profile, however, the whole eye stares out from the side of the head.
The body and legs are in profile, but the torso is turned fully to the front, making the figure's body appear uncomfortably twisted.
Egyptian artists did not try to represent muscles or movement, emotion, or state of mind. Little effort is made to show any individual characteristics.
Most men are shown in pleated linen kilts; women in short linen dresses.

Multiple Choice
The ancient Egyptian paintings that have survived the best are the ones found in the outside air.
True
False
10
How have they survived?
Many paintings by the ancient Egyptians have been preserved, or kept in good condition, throughout the years.
They preserved them by applying paint:
1) whitewash or layer of coarse mud plaster with a smooth layer to top
2) Used mineral pigments for paint as they were strong
3) Protective coating of resin or varnish.
The paintings that survived the best are the ones that were found inside some of the ancient tombs protected from the outside elements.

When images of people were painted, women were typically given a lighter yellowish-brown color, while men were painted a dark red/brown. The varied colors were used to show the difference in lifestyles between men and women at the time, as men were outside working and exposed to the elements more than women.
The main colors that were used during this time were red, blue, green, gold, brown, black, and yellow.
