Kids have always had chores to do. In the past, kids worked side by side with their moms and dads.

Life was hard. Homes did not have lights, so people had to work when it was light. Pipes did not bring water into homes, so people had to use wells or pumps and bring water inside in buckets.

In the past, most kids helped clean up inside their homes and helped make food. Back then, girls and their moms and sisters did most of the work inside a home.

Kids today clean their rooms and make their beds and do other chores at home. Kids might do dishes, sweep, or dust. Kids feed pets and clean up after them.

Kids on the plains played, but they did not shop, see shows, or go out for lunch. It might take more than a day to even get to a store. Most of the things kids played with were made by hand.

Today, kids have much more time to play. Kids get things to play with in stores. They have more things to play with.

Many young kids in the past went to classes. Teachers showed them how to read, write, and do math in class. Other kids had someone teach them these things at home if it was too far to walk to classes.

Today, kids may go to class by bus or by car. Some moms or dads may wish to teach their kids at home, like in times past.

What might it be like to be a kid in times past? Is life for kids better today? Was it sometimes better back then? Some chores that kids did in past times seem like fun, but seem like hard work, too.

Would you trade places with kids in the past for a day to see what life was like back then? Can you picture life in times past?
