Miss Hood told Beth about the contest.

“Kids will write books,” she said. “We’ll judge them next week. We’ll read them to kids to find out which books they like best.”

“I like to write and sketch,” Beth said. “Can I be in this book contest?”

“Yes,” answered Miss Hood. “Write about things that you like to study.”

Beth went back home. She looked at her books. Pete perched next to her.

“I’ve been studying animals,” Beth told him. “What book can I write?”

“Sharks! Fast! Fast!” Pete chirped.

“That’s it, Pete!” Beth said. She looked at her notes and sketchbook. Then she opened her books and got started.

Beth worked on her book each day.

“Will you be at our game?” Lex asked. “I think we will win. We’re the Wild Cats. We run faster. We jump higher!”

“I can’t,” Beth told her. “I must study.” She held up her sketchbook. “Did you know that this cat is the fastest land animal in the world?”

Beth had four days left to write. She needed to hurry to find more facts. Mom helped her look online for good websites.

One website showed how people learn about wildlife. Beth looked at their films and pictures. She took notes.

Now she just needed to add facts about fast birds to finish her book.

“Let’s talk to Pete’s vet,” Mom said. “She is a bird vet.”

“She only treats birds?” asked Beth.

“Yes, just birds,” said Mom. “There are many kinds of vets.”

Beth talked to Pete’s vet and added the vet’s facts to her book. When Beth finished, she turned it in to Miss Hood.

Miss Hood called Beth the next week. Beth got the top prize in the book contest!

“What did you write about?” Lex asked.

“I wrote about animal stars,” Beth said. “I told about animals that swim, run, and fly fast. I wrote about smart birds, like Pete.”

“Pete! Smart! Smart!” Pete chirped. Beth laughed. “That’s right, Pete!”
