1
Students will be able to :
define what a neutron star is and how it form
describe a unique characteristic of a neutron star
2
How does it form?
3
Remains dead stars that are 4-8 times the mass the Sun.
Very dense and mostly made up of neutrons
Very strong gravitational pull
Strong magnetic fields
emits radiation; pulsar
about 20 km in diameter
4
How does a neutron star form
When massive stars burst in a supernova, neutron stars are created.
The gravity is compressing the star while nuclear fusion inside the star is pushing the outward so its balance
But then the gravity suddenly got stronger then overwhelm the internal pressure
Shock waves travel through the star which cause the star to blow up
The gravity is so strong it compress proton and electron together which creates neutron
5
Multiple Choice
What is the main process on how neutron stars form?
Supernova explosion
Stellar accretion
Binary star collision
Nuclear fission
6
Properties of a
7
Gravity
VERY VERY STRONG gravitational pull
About 200000000000 times stronger than Earth
Very strong pull due to their unbelievable mass
Very dense because the gravity squashes the atoms together.
To escape the pull an object must speed-up to half the speed of light
8
Multiple Choice
Which statement best describe a neutron star gravitational pull
same as Earth
A bit stronger than Earth
A lot Stronger than Earth
weaker than Earth
9
Radiation
Produce radiation called pulsars
Neutron stars that produce a lot of pulsars is called a pulsar neutron star
A rapidly spinning neutron star
Caused by particle moving very fast
Can rotate up to 100 times PER SECOND
A pulsar rotation cause the radiation beams to spread through the universe, that's how we can detect a neutron star
10
Multiple Choice
How do pulsars emit radiation?
Through nuclear fusion
Through chemical reactions
Through beams of radiation from the rotation of a neutron star
11
Magnetic fields
One of the strongest in the universe
trillions of time stronger than Earth's
Neutron stars with very strong magnetic fields are called magnetars
Have strong magnetic fields because of powerful electric currents
Dipolar structure, similar to Earth's
Magnetic fields can fade over time
12
Multiple Choice
What is the primary shape of a neutron star's magnetic field?
square
Dipolar
triangle
cylinder
13
Density
Very high density
a single teaspoon can weigh up to billion of tons; 10^17 to 10^18 kilos per cubic meter
Very dense because tightly pack neutrons
One of the densest things in the universe, surpassed only by black holes
14
Multiple Choice
Average density of a neutron star in kilograms per cubic meter
10^17 to 10^18
10^19 to 10^21
10^7 to 10^8
10^11 to 10^13
15
Temperature
very high temperature
the temperature of its surface can be up to 1 million kelvin
the core can be up billions of kelvin
very hot because a lot of energy is released
cool over time, the older the star the cooler
16
Multiple Choice
How does the temperature of a neutron star change over time?
It remains constant throughout its lifespan
It gradually increases as the star ages
It cools down over time
It fluctuates unpredictably due to stellar activity
17
18
Multiple Choice
What is the approximate size of a typical neutron star?
Similar to Earth's size.
Enormous, several times larger than the Sun.
Comparable to the size of our Sun.
About the size of a city.
19
Multiple Choice
What are neutron star that have extremely high magnetic fields call?
magnet star
magnetars
magnet neutron
neutron magnetars
20
Multiple Choice
Which physical property of neutron stars is responsible for their incredibly strong gravitational pull?
Their extremely high mass
Their fast rotational speed.
The presence of a strong magnetic field.
The presence of a strong magnetic field.
21
Multiple Choice
what is a pulsar
A type of supernova explosion.
A binary star system containing a neutron star.
A neutron star emitting regular beams of radiation.
A spacecraft designed to study neutron stars.
