Hyperbole: an over-exaggeration

Example: I'm so hungry I could eat a horse

Alliteration: repetition of the beginning sound of a word

Simile: a comparison using "like" or "as"

Personification: giving human qualities to non-human beings

Adjective: a word that modifies a noun or a pronoun

Answers what kind, which one, how many, how much, or whose

Adverb: a word that modifies a verb, an adjective, or another verb

Answers where, when, how, how often, and to what extent

Noun: a word that names a person, place, or thing

Common noun: man, state, airplane

Proper noun: John Calvin, Nebraska

Verb: a word that shows action, links another word to the subject, or helps another verb

Examples: Painted, was hot, will cut, are on

Conjunction: a word that joins, phrases, or clauses

Coordinating: And, but, or nor

Subordinating: After, although, as

Interjection: an exclamatory word that is not grammatically related to the other words in a sentence

Examples: Ouch! Get off my foot! Aha! I found it!

Pronoun; a word that takes the place of a noun

Examples: I, you, he, she, it, we

Preposition: a word that shows how a noun or a pronoun is related to some other word in the sentence

Examples: Charles sat on the barrel. Charles climbed into the barrel
