Computer Software

•Software is the programs, or instructions, that tell the hardware what to do.

•Software is a generic term used to refer to applications, scripts and programs that run on a device.

Types of Computer software

•The software is a kind of programs that enable a user to perform some specific task or used to operate a computer such as word processing or playing games.

•The sole purpose of application software is to aid the user in doing specified tasks.

Application Software

System Software is a set of programs that control and manage the operations of computer hardware. 

System Software

System software makes the operation of a computer more fast, effective, and secure. It

•Controls the hardware, including any peripherals.

•Allows other programs to run.

•Provides an interface for the user to interact with the computer.

•Maintains the system.

Utility Software

The Utility Software is system software that helps to maintain the proper and smooth functioning of a Computer System. It assists the Operating System to manage, organize, maintain, and optimize the functioning of the computer system.

Utility software includes:

•encryption software

•defragmentation software

•data compression software

•backup software

Device driver

•A device driver is a program that lets the operating system communicate with specific computer hardware.

•Computer parts need a driver because they do not use standard commands.

•It allow devices like keyboard, mouse, printers, scanners, etc to connect to any computer device and work effectively by installing the drivers needed automatically on the computer system.

Operating system

•An operating system is software that manages computer hardware and system resources and provides the tools that applications need to operate.

•It acts as an interface between the user, application software and the computer hardware.

Functions of the Operating System

1. The operating system directs the input and output of data.

2. It manages and keeps track of files.

3. It allocating computer resources to various functions.

4. It serves as an interface between the computer and the user.

5. It allows multitasking.

6. It provides platform for software to run.

Application software

• Application software are programs that are design to perform a specific task for the users.

• Every task a user wants to do have its own specific application.

It is a type of computer program that is used to create and edit images.

Coreldraw, Photoshop, Inkscape, Canvas, Paint, Adobe illustrator

It is a software application for accessing the information on the World Wide Web.

Examples;

Google chrome, Firefox, Microsoft edge, Phoenix, Opera

Web browsers

It is an application or program designed to pass information from one system to another.

Examples;

Email, Whatsapp, Skpe, Slack, Facebook Messenger, Discord

Communication software

It is a software application that helps programmers develop software code efficiently.

Examples;

Audacity, Mpv, Adobe Premiere pro, Adobe Audition, MediaMonkey

Multimedia

It is a software application that helps programmers develop software code efficiently.

Examples;

Visual studio, Adobe Flex Builder, Eclipse, NetBeans.
