Today we will discuss the different terms that we can use to describe the parts of a shoe.

Some of these terms you may be familiar with, but let's see how many terms are new to you!

Do you know these terms?

A metal or plastic tube that is secured tightly around each end of the shoe lace.

Aglet

A cord, string, leather strap, or piece of fabric that are used to pull the shoe tightly to remain snug on your foot.

The material surrounding the eyelets, keeping them in place.

Eyestays

Eyelets

These are the two lines of holes down the top of the shoe that the shoe laces go through.

The opening of the shoe in between where the tongue and eyestays are.

Throat

Tongue

Protects the top of your foot from the laces, adds a layer in between them. This is a soft, sometimes plushy fabric.

The bottom rear-part of a shoe that rests just at or below the heel bone.

Heel

Sole

The bottom of a shoe, could be thick or thin.

A layer of fabric (could be leather or even rubber) that goes in between the insole and the outsole.

Midsole

Insole

This is what your foot rests on, often times it is removable.

Outsole

This is the bottom of the shoe at the front, often times you can see this from the top/ in front and it protects your toes from kicking/ stumping them.

The back-rear section of the shoe, from the tongue to the heel.

Vamp

The front-upper section of the shoe, from the tongue of the shoe to the outsole of the shoe.

Cushioned padding around the sides and back of the shoe to keep your foot held in place, and right under the ankle around your foot protected.

The top edge of the shoe where you insert your foot, this is the very top edge of the quarter.
