but WAS doesn't need it.
And both are SIMPLE PAST

Mark wasn't studying so Lila was scolding him.

Past Continuous

I was home.
Were you at work at 5pm?
Mark didn't study so Lila scolded him.

Simple Past

was & were + verb(ing)
