What is the Conjunction

Conjunction is ...

a word used to connect clauses or sentences or to coordinate words in the same clause (e.g. and, but, if ).

​Conjunction สามารถแบ่งออกเป็นกลุ่มๆ ได้ 3 กลุ่มด้วยกัน

For (เพราะ) ใช้เชื่อมประโยที่เป็นเหตุเป็นผลกัน โดยแสดงเหตุ
And (และ) ใช้เชื่อมประโยคที่เป็นไปในทางเดียวกันหรือเสริมกัน
Nor (ไม่ทั้งสองอย่าง) ใช้เชื่อมประโยคที่เป็นเชิงปฏิเสธทั้งคู่
But , Yet (แต่) ใช้เชื่อมประโยคที่ขัดแย้งกัน
Or (หรือ) ใช้เชื่อมประโยคที่แสดงทางเลือก
So (ดังนั้น) ใช้เชื่อมประโยคที่เป็นเหตุผลเป็นผลกัน โดยแสดงผล

• for ใช้เชื่อมประโยคที่เป็นเหตุเป็นผลกัน (โดย for จะแสดงเหตุ จะแปลว่าเพราะ)

เช่น  He went in, for the door was open.
เขาเข้าไป เพราะ ประตูเปิดอยู่ (สังเกต for จะนำหน้าประโยคที่เป็นเหตุ)

• and ใช้เชื่อมประโยคที่เป็นไปในทางเดียวกัน (แปลว่า และ)

เช่น  I love you and you love me too. (ฉันรักเธอ และ เธอก็รักฉัน)

• nor และ neither ใช้เชื่อมประโยคที่เป็นไปในเชิงปฏิเสธทั้งคู่ (อาจแปลได้ว่า ไม่ทั้งสองอย่าง)

เช่น  He nor I was there. เขาและฉัน ไม่ ได้อยู่ที่นี่ (มาจาก He wasn’t there and I weren’t there.)

• or ใช้เชื่อมประโยคที่แสดงทางเลือก (แปลว่า หรือ)

เช่น  

She wants to watch TV or (to) listen to some music. 
เธอไปดูทีวี หรือ ไปฟังเพลง ( to หน้า listen อาจละไว้ได้)

Would you like sausage or toast fot breakfast.
คุณต้องการกินไส้กรอกหรือขนมปังเป็นอาหารเช้า

• so ใช้เชื่อมประโยคที่เป็นเหตุเป็นผลกัน (โดย so จะแสดงผล แปลว่า ดังนั้น)

เช่น  
The door was open so he went in. 
ประตูเปิดอยู่ ดังนั้น เข้าจึงเข้าไป (สังเกต so จะนำหน้าประโยคที่เป็นผล)
We were out of milk, So i went to the store to buy some.
นมของพวกเราหมดแล้ว ดังนั้นฉันไปยังร้านเพื่อซื้อ

​2. Subordinating conjunction (SC)

Subordinating conjunction (SC) คือ คำสันธานที่ใช้เชื่อมประโยคหลัก (Main Clause) กับประโยคย่อย (Subordinate Clause) ที่มีความสำคัญไม่เท่ากัน เช่น after, because, if, although, before, since, that, unless, until, when, as soon as

while (ในขณะที่)	when (เมื่อ)	after (ก่อนหน้า)
before (หลังจาก)	as soon as (ทันทีที่)	once (ครั้งหนึ่ง)
whenever (เมื่อไหร่ก็ตาม)	until (จนกระทั่ง)	although (แม้ว่า)
though (แม้ว่า)	even though (แม้ว่า)	whereas (ในขณะที่)
because (เพราะว่า)	since (เพราะว่า)	so that (เพื่อว่า, เพื่อที่จะ)
as (เพราะว่า)	in order that (เพื่อว่า, เพื่อที่จะ)	if (ถ้า)
provided that (ถ้า)	assuming that (ถ้า)	as long as (ตราบเท่าที่)
even if (ถ้า, แม้ว่า)	unless (ถ้าหากว่าไม่)	how (อย่างไร)
as though (ราวกับว่า)	as if (ราวกับว่า)	so … that (มากซะจนที่จะ)

• after (หลังจาก)

เช่น
 The girl cried after the boy left.
เด็กหญิงร้องไห้ หลังจาก เด็กชายจากไป

• because (เพราะว่า)

เช่น
 The boy was absent because he was ill. 
เด็กชายขาดเรียน เพราะว่า เขาป่วย

• if (ถ้าหาก)

เช่น
 Stay indoors if it rains. 
อยู่ในร่ม ถ้าหาก ฝนตก

• although (ถึงแม้ว่า)

เช่น  
Although it was cold, I went swimming. 
ถึงแม้ว่า จะหนาวแต่ฉันก็จะไปว่ายน้ำ

เช่น  
Clean the room before I go. 
ทำความสะอาดห้อง ก่อน ที่ฉันจะไป

• since (ตั้งแต่)

เช่น  
He has been busy since he came. 
เขายุ่ง ตั้งแต่ เขามา

• that (เพราะนั่น)

เช่น  
Hold it up so that everyone can see it. 
ชูมันขึ้น เพราะนั่น จะทำให้ทุกคนมองเห็นมัน

• unless (เว้นแต่)

เช่น
 I’ll be there at nine, unless the train is late. 
ฉันจะอยู่ที่นั้นตอนเก้าโมง เว้นแต่ รถไฟจะมาสาย

• until (จนกระทั่ง)

เช่น  
They did not come until the meeting was half over. 
พวกเค้าไม่มา จนกระทั่ง การประชุมผ่านไปเกินกว่าครึ่ง

• when (ในขณะที่)

เช่น  
He is impatient when he is kept waiting.
 เขาจะหงุดหงิด ในขณะที่ เขาต้องรอ

​3. Correlative Conjunction

• คือคำสันธานที่ต้องใช้คู่กันเสมอ(มาคู่กันเหมือนแฝด) โดยจะทำหน้าที่คล้ายๆกับ Coordinating Conjunction คือเชื่อมประโยคที่มีความสำคัญเท่ากันครับ เช่น not only…..but also, either…..or,  as…..as,  so as to,  both…..and

• not only…..but also (ไม่เท่านั้น…แต่อีกด้วย)

เช่น  
Man needs not only food but also shelter. 
มนุษย์ไม่เพียงแต่ต้องการอาหารเท่านั้นแต่ยังต้องการที่พักอาศัยอีกด้วย

​3. Correlative Conjunction

• either…..or (ไม่….หรือ/ก็)

เช่น  
You can either sleep or eat. 
คุณไม่ นอนหลับก็ กิน ประมาณว่าเลือกได้ว่าจะนอนหรือจะกิน

• as…..as (เป็นการใช้เชื่อมประโยคที่แสดงอะไรที่เท่ากัน)

เช่น  She runs as fast as I do. เธอวิ่งเร็วเท่าฉัน (นำคำที่เราต้องการเปรียบเทียบใส่ไปในระหว่าง as กับ as จากตัวอย่างใส่คำว่า fast เป็นการเปรียบเทียบความเร็ว)

​3. Correlative Conjunction

• so as to (เพื่อที่จะ)

เช่น
 I study hard so as to pass the exam. 
ฉันเรียนหนัก เพื่อที่จะ ได้สอบผ่าน (to ตามด้วยกริยาช่องที่ 1 ไม่เติม s)

• both … and (ทั้ง…และ) 

เช่น  
I enjoy both singing and dancing. 
ฉันมีความสุขกับการร้องเพลงและการเต้น
