What is Instructional Mentoring

Instructional mentoring is a mode of school-based professional development that is
structured and has a strong instructional focus.

Instructional mentoring is a developmental and mutually beneficial partnership
whereby a professional with relevant expertise (i.e., the mentor) guides and
develops a colleague (i.e., the mentee) to achieve quality teaching and learning.

Impact of Quality Mentoring

Quality mentoring results in reflective practice.

Reflective practice is a process of introspection that focuses on “thinking about
doing” before, during, and after a lesson (Schon, 1983). Such introspection allows
teachers to gain insight into the purpose and nature of practices to improve future
performance (Hartman, 2009; Zeichner, 2005).

During the mentoring process, mentors support mentees’ reflection by inviting
mentees to analyse the strengths and weaknesses of the lessons conducted.
