SIMPLE QUESTIONS
start with the auxiliary verb:
They help the main verb to denote the actions.
For now, we have two auxiliary verbs: do and be.
We use DO every time we are talking about an action.
The verb BE is used when we are talking about a feeling or describing someone, something, or a phenomenon.
19
SIMPLE QUESTIONS
the subject comes after the auxiliary verb.
The subject is the person or thing that performs the action of a verb or is being described.
We can use pronouns:
I, you, he, she, it, we, you, they.
Or use names(nouns):
Mary, John, mother, dog, trees, rock, etc.
20
SIMPLE QUESTIONS
and it needs a verb or a noun to complement the auxiliary:
It can be a verb, followed by DO, or a noun, followed by BE.
We use verbs to talk about actions, they come with the auxiliary DO in questions and negative sentences.
If we want to describe a person, thing, or phenomenon, we use a noun (adjectives, feelings, etc) that is followed by BE.
21
SIMPLE QUESTIONS
start with the auxiliary verb:
and have 'yes' or 'no' answers:
Short answers
Positive
If the answer is positive, the sentence usually starts with 'YES,'.
If it is negative, it often starts with 'NO,'.
22

and, in this case ( short answers ), after the subject, we have the auxiliary verb, the same one used in the question.
24
SIMPLE QUESTIONS
Start with the auxiliary verb:
and have 'yes' or 'no' answers:
Short answers
Positive
In negatives, we need to add a 'NOT' after the auxiliary verb, which usually gets contracted ( do not = don't ).
25
SIMPLE QUESTIONS
start with the auxiliary verb:
and have 'yes' or 'no' answers:
Short answers
Positive
Negative
In questions, we always have an auxiliary verb, a subject, and a verb or noun.
In short answers to simple questions, we will answer positively by repeating the auxiliary, and in negatives, we put the same auxiliary in the negative form.
