Prefix:
determine the number fo C
Subfix:
-ane tells it is an alkane (all C-C single bonds)
-ene tells it is an alkene (at least 1 C-C double bond)
-yne tells it is an alkyne (at least 1 C-C triple bond)
Naming hydrocarbons is based on the number of C in the hydrocarbon chain.
Hydrocarbon Nomenclature
10
Example:
1) C-C-C-C
Thinking:
4 carbons prefix is but-
All single bonds suffix is -ane
So this is butane
Example:
2) C-C-C-C=C
Thinking:
5 carbons prefix is pent-
There is a double bond suffix is -ene
So this is pentene
Since the double bond can be at different places, we need to designate where the double bonds is. This is done by numbering the C. In this case from right to left since the double bond is closes to the right. So the of this molecule is acutally 1-pentene.
