Types of Maps and Parts of Maps

Political Map

one which shows the physical features of a place or country, like rivers, mountains, forests and lakes.

Physical Map

A map showing boundaries of countries, states, provinces or cities

a map created to display information about a topic or theme.

Thematic Map

images which show a particular event or time in the past

Historical Map

the relationship between distance on the map and distance in real life

Scale

use of symbols, lines and colors used to represent important places on a map

Legend

​a symbol on a map that shows the cardinal direction

Compass Rose

Tells you what the map is about

the study of the spatial characteristics of the world’s land and people
