AET511 Brief:
AET511 Fundamentals of Mechanical Workshop
This unit aims to provide learners with the knowledge and skills to use a drawing instrument to produce 2D and 3D drawings. In this unit, the learners will use freehand sketching techniques to produce the 3D drawing, and they will be able to read and interpret simple engineering drawings and diagrams. The unit also explains how to use CAD software to produce a physical component on 3D printers and laser engraving machines.

Introduction:
AET511 Fundamentals of Mechanical Workshop
Technical drawing is the study of the procedures, tools, supplies, skills and techniques used to record and communicate the shape and size of a product.
9
Drawing Instruments:
AET511 Fundamentals of Mechanical Workshop
To prepare a drawing, one can use manual drafting instruments, or computer-aided drafting (CAD).
If the drawing is made without either manual instruments or CAD, it is called a freehand sketch.

Paper sizes used:
AET511 Fundamentals of Mechanical Workshop
Drawing paper is available in ‘A’ series, ‘B’ series, and rolls of the International Organization for standardization (ISO), but series ‘A’ is preferred.
17
The use of scale:
AET511 Fundamentals of Mechanical Workshop
In order to produce a drawing showing components in detail or as plans it is often necessary to use a scale.
Different scenarios:
Enlargements scales: 2:1 5:1 10:1
Full scale (same size): 1:1
Reduction scales: 1:2 1:10 1:100
