Enlightenment thinkers
During the 1700s, the English colonies came under the influence of the Enlightenment
and the Great awakening. The former championed human reason while the latter
stressed a new personal relationship with God.
1.. Enlightenment thinkers believed that natural laws applied to social, political and
economic relationships. As well as that people could figure out the natural laws if they
employed reason. These beliefs are known as rationalism.
2.. John Locke was a very influential enlightenment writer and was a very popular
political philosopher. His writings reflected lessons learned from the GLorious
Revolution, when there were times of revolution against the king could be justified.
3.. Locke’s contract theory of government and natural rights had influenced greatly on
the thinking of future American political leaders. And during this period of turmoil,
Locke had published two Treatises of Government.
3
Religion
Though some Americans turned away from certain religious beliefs, others had renewed their Christian faith. Many Americans had embraced a European religious movement called Pietism, which stresses an individual's piety (devoutness) and an emotional union with God.
Throughout the colonies, ministers would have religious revivals: large public meetings used for preaching and prayer. The widespread surge of of increased religious fervor became known as the Great Awakening.
4
Religion continued…
1.. In 1734, Massachusetts preacher Jonathan Edwards helped launch the Great
Awakening. He would hold powerful sermons and would argue that a person had to
repent and convert. His emotional, rather than rational, style of preaching was typical
of the fervor of the Great Awakening.
a.George Whitefield, an Anglican minister from England, had also attracted and
inspired many of his listeners to take on a more religious standpoint in life.
2.. During 1740 was the Great Awakenings peak. Those who had embraced the new
ideas, which included Baptists, Presbyterians, and Congregationalists, as well as
methodists had won many converts. Tho, churches that held onto their traditional
styles of preaching and teaching had lost members.
3.. The Enlightenment and the Great Awakening both had different origins, but both had
largely affected colonial society. The Enlightenment had provided arguments against
the British rule. And the Great Awakening had served to undermine allegiance to
traditional authority and teachings.
