States of Matter Review
2
Thermal Energy
Thermal energy (heat) makes particles of matter vibrate. The more thermal energy a substance has, the faster its particles move!
3
Kinetic Energy
Kinetic energy is the energy of movement.
The more an object moves, the more kinetic energy something has.
Movement creates heat, so if matter has kinetic energy, it has thermal energy.
4
Kinetic/Thermal Energy
More kinetic energy = More movement
More movement = More Heat
Think: If you were to run a mile, would your body heat up or cool down?
5
Multiple Choice
This diagram shows different states of matter. The first box has the least amount of thermal energy. Thermal energy increases with each box. which box has the most thermal energy and particle movement?
1st box
(solid)
2nd box
(liquid)
3rd box
(gas)
they all have the same amount of energy
6
Multiple Choice
Which answer choice correctly shows thermal energy increasing with each box?
A

liquid to solid
10
Plasma is the state with the most kinetic energy (movement).
It particles move so fast because it has the most thermal energy.
Plasma particles are charged. They have a positive or negative charge.
Don't forget plasma!
11
Multiple Choice
If the thermal energy in plasma decreases, it will first become a...
Solid
liquid
gas

Multiple Choice
It is snowing outside so you decide to build a snowman. You love it so much that you take it inside to join the family. Your house thermostat is set to a toasty 80 degrees. What is likely to happen to your snowman?
Your snowman will gain thermal energy and freeze solid.
Your snowman will gain thermal energy and melt into a liquid.
Your snowman will lose thermal energy and freeze solid.
Your snowman will lose thermal energy and melt into a liquid.
13
Elements are the most simple form of matter.
Made up of one type of atom
Can be a single atom or several of the same atoms (molecules).
Elements
14
Compounds are more than one element combined chemically.
They can only be separated through chemical reactions.
Compounds
15
Mixtures are can include single elements and compounds together.
Mixtures are a physical combination.
As such, they can be separated by physical means.
Ex. Iron shavings removed from sand with a magnet.
