Living On Planet Earth
Science Lesson 2
2
Introduction:
Today we are going to learn
about why Planet Earth is so
special and favorable for life.
There are certain features of our
planet that make it possible for
plants, animals, and people to
live here. These features include
our atmosphere, water, land, and
natural resources. Let's get
started!
3
The Atmosphere
Our atmosphere is the layer of
gases that surrounds Earth. It is
made up of nitrogen, oxygen,
carbon dioxide, and other gases.
The atmosphere provides us with
the air we breathe and protects
us from harmful radiation from
space. It also helps regulate
Earth's temperature and weather
patterns. Without our
atmosphere, Earth would be a
barren, dry planet unable to
support life.

Water
Water covers about 70% of Earth's
surface. It exists as oceans, lakes,
rivers, streams, underground
reservoirs, glaciers, and polar ice
caps. All living things need water to
survive. We use water for drinking,
cleaning, transportation, recreation,
and more. Water helps regulate
Earth's climate by absorbing heat
from the sun. The water cycle
continuously moves water from
oceans to air to land and back
again.

Land
Land makes up about 30% of
Earth's surface. It provides a
habitat for plants, animals, and
people. Different landforms like
mountains, valleys, and plateaus
provide diverse ecosystems and
climates. Land provides us
materials like soil for growing
food, wood for building, and
minerals for making metals. Most
human civilization exists on the
solid land.
11
Natural Resources
Earth provides us with all the
natural resources we need for
survival. Air, water, and land give
us the basic requirements of
food, water, and shelter. We also
get energy resources like fossil
fuels, solar power, wind power,
and geothermal energy. Metals,
minerals, trees, and plants
provide building materials.
Earth's resources allow human
civilization to develop and thrive.
