1

What do you remember about respiration?

Can you...
- write out the equation
- say if it is exothermic or endothermic
- give the part of the cell responsible for aerobic respiration

Anaerobic Respiration

L.I: Why does exercise feel harder at the beginning?

3

Poll

How much exercise do you do in a week?

Nothing

Maybe 1 hour

Probably 3-4 hours

Lots, 6+ hours

4

Poll

What type of exercise do you do?

Team sports

Running

Weights/gym

None

5

Muscle Fatigue

At the beginning all exercise is anaerobic

This means oxygen is not being used and so you do not get as much
energy to your muscles

It takes place in the cytoplasm

A by product is formed which is harmful to your muscles and makes
them ache (fatigue) - lactic acid

To Do:

Hold your bag in both hands

Move it above your head and down again as many times as you
can in the next 2 minutes

7

Muscle Fatigue

You moved your bags above your head...a lot

How do your muscles feel?

Do you think that they feel like this because of your normal
exercise routine?

8

Lactic Acid

This is actually acidic and so is harmful to cells

It builds up as you do more anaerobic respiration and must
be broken down to be removed

Oxygen is necessary for this break down (oxygen debt)

Multiple Choice

Which do you think is the correct definition for oxygen debt?

1

The oxygen required to be able to exercise

2

The oxygen required for the cells to survive

3

The oxygen required to repay the amount used in anaerobic respiration

Fitness Levels

Respiration requires oxygen and glucose

Both of which are transported in the blood but they
originate from different areas

How does this fit with breathing rate and heart rate
remaining high after exercise has finished?

16

Anaerobic in Plants

Plants can also undergo anaerobic respiration

However, they do not produce lactic acid

Plants produce ethanol and carbon dioxide

17

Draw

Draw one difference between aerobic and anaerobic respiration.
