In order to express that you like something, you can use "gern" with a verb (and sometimes an object)
Ich spiele gern Fußball.

In order to express preference (that you like it more than something else), you can use "lieber". "Lieber" replaces "gern".
Ich spiele lieber Basketball.

In order to express that you like something the most, you use "am liebsten". "Am liebsten" replaces "gern".
Ich spiele am liebsten Golf.

How do you create sentences using gern - lieber - am liebsten (or even mögen)?

If there is just a verb, then the word order looks like this:
Er schwimmt gern.
Er schwimmt lieber.
Am liebsten schwimmt er.
Just a verb
If there is a verb and an object, then:
Die Frauen tanzen gern Disko.
Die Frauen tanzen lieber HipHop.
Die Frauen tanzen am liebsten Jazz.
Verb + Object
If there is just an object, then the you must use "mögen"
Sie mag die Berge. (she likes the mountains)
Wir mögen Schuhe. (we like shoes)

The verb "mögen" can also be used to express preference. It translates as "to like"

Verb is always 2nd
In all of the examples on the previous slide, the verb is always 2nd. This is VERY important, especially as we learn more adverbs of time.
Heute will ich lieber Ju Jutsu machen. (today I would prefer to do jiu jitsu)
Manchmal mag er seinen Hund. (sometimes he likes his dog)
Wir spielen gern mit unserem Hamster. (we like to play with our hamster)

Volleyball spielen is a verb and object, so you use gern + object at the end
fotografieren is just a verb, so it is just followed by "gern"
Auto is an object, so you use "mögen"
