Plus-que-parfait
Le plus-que-parfait (pqp) is a past tense. You can think of it as the past tense of the imparfait. Grammatically, it is a combination of the passé composé and the imparfait.

Plus-que-parfait
passé composé + imparfait = plus-que-parfait
It is used to talk about an action in the past that happened before another past action.
In many cases you need to reference another past action or point in time

By the time she ate dinner, she had already eaten four snacks.

Formation
aux verb + past participle
aux verb = avoir or être, follows the same rules as the passé composé
aux verb is in the imparfait
the past participles are the same as in the passé composé!
