  1. Can you tell me what are the terms in this expression?

  2. Can you identify any term which is similar to the other?

7

Like and Unlike Terms

  • The terms that have the same variables and powers are called like terms. For e.g. 2xy, -5xy, 5yx

  • the terms that do not have the same variables and powers are called unlike terms. For e.g. x, 2m, 3

  1. Identify the terms in the given expression.

  2. If the variables and powers are the same, the terms are like.

  3. If the variables are the same but powers are different, the terms are unlike.

  4. If the variables are different but powers are the same, the terms are unlike.

How Key Points to classify like and unlike terms in an expression

9

In your groups, classify the like terms together from the following:
12x,
12,
–25x,
–25,
–25y,
1,
x,
12y,
y

Look at the following expressions. What do you observe?

Monomials, Binomials, Trinomials, Polynomials

  • An expression with only one term is called a monomial; for example, 7xy, – 5m, 3z2 , 4 etc.

  • An expression that contains two unlike terms is called a binomial; for example, x + y, m – 5, mn + 4m, a2 – b2 are binomials.

  • An expression that contains three terms is called a trinomial; for example, the expressions x + y + 7, ab + a +b, 3x2 – 5x + 2, m + n + 10 are trinomials.

  • An expression with one or more terms is called a polynomial.

12

media
  1. Identify the number of terms in the expression.

  2. If the number of terms are one, its a monomial.

  3. If the number of terms are two, its a binomial.

  4. If the number of terms are three, its a trinomial.

  5. If the numbers are more than three, its a polynomial
