Lunar Phases and Eclipses Review
2
Read and review Lunar Phases while we wait for your classmates to join
3
Why are we doing this?
This is to review lunar phases and skills before we continue on with eclipses.
It lets me know who is good and who need more help with either the science or the writing/reading skills.
This is part of your grade not based on how well you do but if you try.

Match
Match the moon phase to its model.

Multiple Choice
A new moon occurs once ever 29.5 days. Why must the Sun, Earth, and Moon be aligned for a new moon to occur?
No sunlight is reflected off Earth at this point
Sunlight directed towards Earth is blocked by the Moon
The Moon does not orbit in the same plane as Earth
The Moon is not directing any light towards Earth at this point.

Multiple Choice
At which locations is the moon in a waxing phase?

Multiple Choice
Would the phases of the Moon be affected if the Moon did not rotate and revolve at the same speed?
Yes
No
9
No it would not matter if the speed changed. The light given off by the Moon comes from the Sun. It does not matter what side of the Moon is facing Earth.
10
Open Ended
Make a claim about the question:
Why does the Moon's appearance change?
Sentence Frame: The Moon's changing appearance is cause by...
11
Claim: The Moon's change in appearance is caused by the Moon's revolution/orbit around Earth.
12
Open Ended
What is some evidence you have about the Moon's changing appearance. Use the following questions.
1. Why do we see the moon?
2. How does he Moon move?
3. What do we see on Earth when it moves?
13
We see the Moon as it reflects light from the Sun to Earth. The Moon revolves around the Earth and it takes about a month for it to do so. When it does we see lunar phases at various points through the month.
14
Open Ended
Reason why we see the lunar phases.
(Explain why your evidence supports your claim)
The Moon's change in appearance is caused by the Moon's revolution/orbit around Earth. We see the Moon as it reflects light from the Sun to Earth. The Moon revolves around the Earth and it takes about a month for it to do so. When it does we see the changes we call lunar phases at various points through the month. Because....
15
Claim: The Moon's change in appearance is caused by the Moon's revolution/orbit around Earth.
Because the Moon is revolving around the Earth and reflecting light, different amounts of light are reflected at different positions. Each lunar phase is at a different angle for us on Earth and therefore reflecting different amounts of light. The Moon itself isn't actually changing, the amount of light and shadow are.
Reasoning
We see the Moon as it reflects light from the Sun to Earth. The Moon revolves around the Earth and it takes about a month for it to do so. When it does we see the changes we call lunar phases at various points through the month.

Multiple Choice
What is occurring in the model?
lunar eclipse
blood moon
partial lunar eclipse
solar eclipse
20
Multiple Choice
Why would someone in North America not be able to view this eclipse?
Because this is a lunar eclipse and Earth casts a very small shadow.
Because this is a lunar eclipse and North America is experiencing day in the model.
Because this is a solar eclipse and North America is experiencing night in the model.
Because this is a solar eclipse and the moon casts a very small shadow.
21
Open Ended
Think about it. Some people think the Earth is flat. During the lunar eclipse Earth casts a shadow on the Moon. If the Earth was flat, what would the shadow on the Moon look like instead of round?
22
If the Earth was flat, we would see a bar shape on the moon

23
Multiple Choice
Why don’t solar eclipses occur every new moon?
The Moon's orbit around Earth and Earth's orbit around the Sun are not the same speed, so the three bodies only line up during the full moon
The Moon’s orbit around Earth and Earth’s orbit around the Sun are not in the same plane, so the three bodies only line up occasionally
The Moon’s orbit around the Sun and Earth’s orbit around the Sun are not in the same plane, so the three bodies only line up occasionally.
