Cell Transport
2
3
Cell Transport
Cell transport is movement of materials across cell membranes.
Two Types:
Passive transport
Active transport
4
Cell are constantly absorbing and releasing things into their surroundings.
5
6
The cell membrane controls what enters and exits the cell
7
The membrane is selectively permeable, which means it allows some things in and out of the cell - but not all things. (It's selective)
8
The movement of substances across the cell membrane without using energy from the cell.
Examples:
diffusion
facilitated diffusion
osmosis.
(does not require energy)
Passive Transport
9
10
Multiple Choice
When substances are TOO large to move across the plasma membrane on their own, they can use ______ or _____ to diffuse across the cell membrane
lipids, carbohydrates
lipids, nucleic acids
water, salt
channel proteins, carrier proteins
11
Active Transport
relies on the use of energy to move substances into and out of cells. Usually, molecules are traveling against a concentration gradient.
12
Protein pumps
13
Prokaryotes vs Eukaryotes
14
15
Labelling
Sort the following statements based on if the statement is talking about prokaryotes or eukaryotes
Unicellular organisms
Ribosomes are found in the cell
DNA is found in the cell
DNA is found in the nucleus
more complex structure
16
Labelling
Determine where the following organelles can be found (if the organelle can be found in more than one, place in the middle of the two columns).
Nucleoid
ER (endoplasmic reticulum)
Golgi Body
Chloroplast

Endosymbiosis is the theory that explains the
Origin of membrane bound organelles
Origin of prokaryotic life
Origin of all cells on earth
Origin of the cell membrane
24

Which statement below provides evidence to support the endosymbiotic theory?
Membranes of the endoplasmic reticulum and Golgi apparatus are similar to the plasma membrane.
Both eukaryotes and prokaryotes contain DNA.
Mitochondria and chloroplasts contain DNA similar to prokaryotic DNA.
Both eukaryotes and prokaryotes contain ribosomes.

Multiple Choice
Which statement compare a function of lipid and protein in a human cell?
Proteins provide energy for cellular processes. Lipids catalyze chemical reactions in the cell.
Proteins catalyze chemical reactions in the cell. Lipids allow for transport of certain molecules into and out of the cell.
