Grammar Rules

First, let's take a look at how Spanish deals with males and females.  Very often they use the same words and change the endings to show it being a male or female.  Take a look at these pairs of words:

muchacho --> muchacha   (boy --> girl)

alumno --> alumna  (male student --> female student)

maestro --> maestra (male teacher --> female teacher)

Gender: males vs. females

13

Grammar Rules

Now take a look at the words un and una.  They both mean "a, an".  They should remind you of the number 1 in Spanish (uno) and with good reason.  If you have a thing you have 1 thing.  But there are 2 spellings:  one is masculine and the other feminine.

Example:  un chico / una chica

The plural of un is unos (some).  The plural of una is unas (some).

Example: un chico (a boy) / unos chicos (some boys)

un, una, unos, unas

Grammar Rules

Gender of objects

Nouns that refer to males and females have gender (masculine and feminine).  That's easy--English does that.  But, in Spanish ALL nouns have gender.  ALL nouns are masculine or feminine--even objects.🤯

Don't worry too much--it's fairly predicable.  ALMOST all nouns that end in -a are feminine.  ALMOST all nouns that end in -o are masculine.

Example:  un libro (masculine);  un escritorio (masculine)

Example:  una regla (feminine); una carpeta (feminine)

23

How does Spanish make a noun plural?  By adding -s or -es.  It's pretty easy:  if the noun ends in a vowel, add -s; if the noun ends in a consonant, add -es.

Example:  calculadora --> calculadoras;  pupitre --> pupitres

Example:  marcador --> marcadores;   póster --> pósteres

Here's the troublemaker:  lápiz --> lápices
(the z changed to c, then added -es)

Grammar Rules

The verb tener (to have)

Tener (to have) is a very important verb.  You will use it a lot.  It has different spellings though, depending on who is doing the action. (Fancy Grammatical Term:  subject/verb agreement)

Yo tengo = I have      Tú tienes = You have (informal)     Ud. tiene = You have (formal)
él tiene = he has     ella tiene = she has

Since the spellings are different, subject pronouns become optional.

Yo tengo   OR   Tengo  = I have

Tù tienes   OR   Tienes = you have

Ud. tiene / Él tiene /Ella tiene   OR   Tiene = You have / he has / she has
(honestly most people use the long form with this one since it can mean several things
