The Great Plains and western prairies is a vast region located between the Mississippi River and east of the Rocky Mountains.

During the late 1800s, railroad construction and development stimulated growth. In 1862, the government encouraged settlement passing the Homestead Act - for a small fee, an individual could buy a tract of public land available for settlement
