Inferring to Predict, Connect, and Determine Key Ideas
CO: The inferences I make can help me to make predictions,
connections, and determine key ideas.
2
Inferences:
What the text tells us
PLUS
What we already know
“Reading between the lines”
What is being implied but not explicitly said?
3
For example - You always sit with your best friend at lunch. Today they didn’t sit with you and when you look over at them they won’t make eye contact. What could be going on? In order to make some educated predictions, you start by inferring what you know about this type of situation.
What did I do wrong?
You are already experts at inferring. You do it
everyday.
4
Good inferences help us to do several things that make us better readers
Predictions:
We can only make accurate predictions about something when our inferences are correct.
Connections:
Inferring helps us connect what
we are reading to our own lives, experiences, and ideas.
Determining Key Ideas:
We are able to tell what is really important in a text when we accurately infer author’s purpose.
