WHAT AI ACTUALLY IS

AI, or Artificial Intelligence, refers to the simulation of human intelligence in computers and other machines. It's a branch of computer science that focuses on creating systems and software that can perform tasks that typically require human intelligence, such as understanding natural language, recognizing patterns, solving problems, and making decisions.

Our topic

Kristen and I decided to choose AI in Music and Movie Recommendations as our topic. We will be showing you the various ways that music and movie sites, such as Netflix, Youtube Music, and Spotify, use AI to generate more music and movies for you based on what you have listened to or watched previously. We will also learn that AI is all around you, in many ways that you might have not even expected.

How Do Movie Sites use AI?

One way that movie sites use AI is by using GPTflix, and other actual AI's that generate more movies based on previous movie preferences. GPTflix finds similar movies by analyzing movie descriptionsreviews, and other relevant information to identify patterns, themes, and characteristics that are common between movies.

How Do Music Sites use AI?

Music sites can use AI to generate recommendations in a few different interesting ways. The first way is that if for example, one person listens to a lot of music from artists X, Y, and Z, and another person enjoys music from artist X and Y, AI recommends the the second person to listen to songs from artist Z. This works because the AI is trained to assume that these two different people have a similar taste in music, thus recommending them music one person has listened to, but the other hasn't.

The second way that Music sites use AI is by looking at playlists. Say, for example, many people put song A and B in the same playlist. Then, the AI assumes that these two songs have something in common, and it can recommend it to other people that have only listened to one of the songs. The last clue that AI uses to generate recommendations is through analysis of lyrics. The AI looks for common details in songs such as locations, brands, or people mentioned throughout the text. Then it uses this to find similar songs and generate more recommendations. Using all of these different methods, the AI can generate recommendations that are accurate, or at least close to accurate.

Through AI music recommendation, people can find out new songs that they like and, haven't even heard of before. This wouldn't have been possible before, using human skills, because we ourselves don't know every song that exists, and we don't have the time to go through the process of filtering out songs that we think we might like either. So really, AI is saving us a bunch of time in going through this process, and it's really only something AI will be able to do.

​Though there are many pros to using AI in music recommendations, there are also many cons to it as well. One con is that no matter what, AI can never replace you and your taste in music, and it can only be accurate to some extent. It can also get really annoying sometimes if the AI keeps recommending you music that you don't like.
