What is an in-text citation?

An in-text citation is a reference within your work. It gives information to identify the original source.

Why do we need in-text citations?

• To avoid plagiarism

• To inform readers of the original source

IN-Text Citations

Direct Quotes, Paraphrasing, Summarizing

What's the Difference??!!

Quoting---involves copying short sentences or passages from the original text word-for-word places copied wording within “quotation marks” 

Paraphrasing---involves putting a section of a text into your own words changes the words and phrasing of the original text, but keeps the original meaning of the text

Summarizing---involves stating the main ideas and findings of a text into your own words presents a general overview, so is usually much shorter than the original text

Direct quotes are placed within quotation marks (" ") 

Example:

"It is ridiculous to borrow someone's items without them knowing, and becoming enraged when you're reprimanded for stealing" (Ling 20).

Paraphrasing---keep the same meaning of the original text, using different words

Example:

Silliness is using someone's items without consent---and being mad when you get into trouble (Ling 20).

Summarizing---state the main parts using your words, giving a brief version

Example:

Ling discusses the ludicrous way people become upset when they are punished for borrowing with asking (Ling 20).
