3.1 Linear Equations (day 2)

2

We can use a linear equation to find the x- and y-intercepts for a graph. Once we have those two points we can graph the line.

Some special equations like horizontal lines and vertical lines only have one intercept unless their graph is one of the axis.

The graph of an equation represents the set of all of the solutions to the equation. Any point that is not a solution to an equation will not be on the line.

4

Graphing

Graph x+2y=4-x+2y=4 using the x- and y-intercepts.

5

Graphing

Graph y=x5y=-x-5 using the x- and y-intercepts.

6

7

Match

Match each x coordinate with the correct y coordinate for the following linear equation:

2xy=22x-y=2

When x = -2

When x = -1

When x = 0

When x = 1

When x = 2

y = -6

y = -4

y = -2

y = 0

y = 2
