Newton’s Laws of Motion
• 1st Law – Inertia (Laziness)
• Objects in motion stay in motion (same speed
and direction), objects at rest stay at rest, until
an outside force acts on them.
• The more mass an object has, the more inertia
it has.
3
What does this mean?
• This means that there is a natural tendency of objects
to keep on doing what they're doing. All objects resist
changes in their state of motion. In the absence of an
unbalanced force, an object in motion will maintain this
state of motion.
4
Newton’s 2nd Law of Motion
• The greater the mass of the object, the
greater the amount of force needed to
accelerate the object.
• Or F = MA
(force) = (mass) x (acceleration)
5
Newton’s 2nd law helps us predict who will eat it
in a collision (more mass = more force, AND
more force required to change a more massive
object’s velocity!)
6
Newton’s 3rd law of Motion
• When 1 object exerts a force on a 2nd object,
the 2nd object exerts an equal force in an
opposite direction on the first object.
• (for every action there is an = and opposite
reaction)
