China becomes a target for trade.
For many years, the borders of China were closed to foreigners (outsiders). Trade with other countries was limited or restricted.
For centuries China was the dominant power in Asia, but by the 1800s it had become fractured (unstable) because of internal conflicts and wars with other countries. It became known as the “sick man” of Asia.

Japan dominant power in Asia.
After the United States opened Japan's borders for trade, the country quickly industrialized.
China was defeated by Japan in 1895 during the Sino-Japanese War. This war showed the world that China was now an easy target.
Japan would become the dominant Asian country after defeating Russia in the Russo-Japanese War in 1905.

Open Door Policy
