Algebraic Properties of Operations
2
How can you find the total of these grocery items?
You can add all of the numbers in order or move them around. Either way, you'll get the same amount.
Why does that work??
3
Commutative Property!
As long as you have multiplication or addition, order doesn't matter!
4
Match
Match the original equation with the one that uses the commutative property
2 + 4
3x + 8
5 * 8
4+ 2
8 + 3x
8 * 5
4+ 2
8 + 3x
8 * 5
5
Associative Property
Still only words with addition and multiplication.. It changes what numbers are grouped together! Think of it like who you associate yourself with.. Your friend group!
6
Multiple Choice
Which expressions show the commutative property? Remember it only works with ALL addition or ALL multiplication
1+2*5=1*5+2
3+x+7=3+7+x
4*5*12=4*5*20
7
Multiple Select
Which expressions show the associative property? There are 2 correct answers.
(12+9)+11=12+(9+11)
(3*6)*4=3*(6*4)
(4+9)+5=4+(9*5)
8
Identity Properties
Work with addition and multiplication. This doesn't change the original number. Think of it as your personal identity and not changing who you are.
9
Multiple Select
Which expressions show the identity property? There are 2 correct answers.
14+1=15
1 * 15= 15
0 + 19= 19
10
Multiple Choice
Which property is demonstrated: 13 + 19 + 7 = 13 + 7 + 19
11
Draw
Draw a circle where the identity property is used. Where does the original number not change?
12
Draw
Draw a circle where the commutative property is used.. Where do we change the order of the numbers?
13
Draw
Draw a circle where the associative property is used.. Where do we change how the numbers are grouped?
14
Draw
Draw a circle where the commutative property is used.. Where do we change the order of the numbers?
