• In Spanish, our articles must match nouns in GENDER & NUMBER!!

• Just like our adjectives, right?

• All Spanish nouns, even if they're nonliving things, are either MASCULINE or FEMININE

• Nouns ending in "o" are usually MASCULINE

• Nouns ending in "a" are usually FEMININE

Los artículos definidos (definite articles)

• So you've already seen our nouns start with either a "la" or an "el".

• THESE ARE DEFINITE ARTICLES!!

• They both mean "the".

• In English, "the" is used with nouns to indicate specific persons, places, or things.

• El chico --> THE boy

• El papel --> THE paper

• EL bolígrafo --> THE pen

Los artículos indefinidos (indefinite articles)

• In English, the indefinite article is "an", "some", or "a".

• We use these with nouns to indicate NONSPECIFIC persons, places, or things.

• The boy is a friend

• El chico es un amigo

• He's not THE one and only friend, he's just A friend.

Want to make a noun plural?

If it ends in a vowel, just add "s"! If the noun ends in a consonant, just add "es". If it ends in "z", cancel the "z" and add "ces".

Por ejemplo...

estudiante (student) --> estudiantes (students)

mujer (woman) --> mujeres (women)
luz --> luces (lights)
Note: When plurarizing nouns, the article also becomes plural.
Por ejemplo:
el estudiante (student) --> los estudiantes (students)

la mujer (woman) --> las mujeres (women)
la luz --> las luces (lights)
