Repaso (Review)

• Direct object pronouns take the place of direct objects. The direct object pronouns are: me, te, lo/la, nos, los/las

• Indirect object pronouns are used with or take the place of the indirect object. The indirect object answers the question ¨to whom¨ or ¨for whom¨. The indirect object pronouns are: me, te, le, nos, les

• Object pronouns are placed in front of the conjugated verb or they can be attached to an infinitive or participle.

Double Object Pronouns

When you are using both an indirect and direct object pronoun, the indirect object pronoun will come before the direct object pronoun. Think of I.D.

​Indirect Object Pronouns answer the questions:

To whom? or For whom? of the verb.

​Example: The waiter served you steak.

To whom or for whom was the steak SERVED?

It was served to YOU.

En español YOU would be tú... So te would be used.

​En español: El camarero te sirvió el bistec (a ti).

*** a ti is optional since te only refers to tú.

​Indirect Object Pronouns

​-Can be used to replace the indirect object noun (to whom or for whom the action was made) if the noun is clear (me, te, nos).

​-Sometimes the indirect object pronoun is used WITH the indirect object noun to provide clarity (when le or les is used).

In this case, clarifying words are used:

Le sirvieron el desayuno a ella.

"a ella" clarifies the "le" (to whom or for whom)

​Direct Object Pronouns answer the questions:

who? or what? of the verb.

Direct Object Pronouns REPLACE the direct object nouns to avoid repetition.

​Example: The waiter served steak.

What did the waiter serve? Steak.

En español, Steak is el bistec. Lo would replace it.

El camarero lo sirvió. (the waiter served it)

​when both indirect and direct object pronouns are used in a sentence, they are called double object pronouns.

• Reflexive pronouns are used when the action is being done to oneself.

• Reflexive pronouns are used to tell who the action is being done to (e.g. to myself, to yourself, to himself, etc)

• The reflexive pronouns are as followed: me, te, se, nos, os, se

• Indirect Object Pronouns replace the Indirect Object.​

• The IO benefits from the action of the verb answering the question "to whom?" or "for whom?"

  The indirect object pronouns are as followed: me, te, le, nos, os, les

Repaso- Direct Object Pronouns

• Replace the direct object in your sentence

• The DO receives the action of the verb - find your verb and ask the question "what?" or "who?" after the verb.

  • I bought a shirt for my mom. "Bought what?" - a shirt

• The direct object pronouns are as followed: me, te, lo/la, nos, os, los/las

• directly before the conjugated verb -- Lo compro, Lo estoy viendo

• attached to an infinitive- Vamos a lavarnos las manos

• attached to the present/progressive participle ("ing")- Estoy diciéndoles la verdad.

• after a conjugated verb in an indicative tense (all tenses we know so far are indicative)

• attached to a PAST participle (e.g. hablado, caminado, leído, visto)

DOUBLE Pronouns

When you are using 2 pronouns at the same time, there is a certain order that must be followed.

​To remember the order of pronouns, use RID.

1. ​​Reflexive

2. ​Indirect

3. ​Direct

​Good news....

​You wouldn't ever have an instance of having ALL 3 types of pronouns in the sentence. Whew!

You just need to remember this order for the ones that are in the sentence.​
