1
Energy
The ability to do work.
Work in science is the product of a force being applied to an object and the
distance over which the force is applied.
Work = Force (N) x Distance (m)
In other words, work results in the movement of an object in the same direction
that a force is applied.
2
Fill in the Blank
3
Math Response
A force of 50 N is applied to an object to move it 3 meters. How much work is done on the object?
4
Types of Energy
Electrical
Mechanical
Chemical
Thermal
Electromagnetic
Sound
Nuclear
5
Multiple Choice
How many types of energy are there?
5

6
Mechanical Energy
The sum of potential and kinetic energy (KE + PE)
Potential energy is because of position or composition (stored energy).
PE = Mass x Gravity (9.8) X Height
Kinetic energy is energy due to motion of an object.
KE = 0.5 x mass x (velocity)2
7
Multiple Select
Mechanical energy is the sum of which 2 of the following types of energy?
potential
electrical
kinetic
thermal
8
Match
Match the following
Mechanical
Potential
Kinetic
Sum of potential and kinetic
due to an object's position
due to the motion of an object
Sum of potential and kinetic
due to an object's position
due to the motion of an object
9
Labelling
Label the following.
highest kinetic energy
highest potential energy
10
Electrical Energy
Results from the flow of electric charge (moving electrons)
Watt: a measurement of how quickly electrical energy is moved
11
Fill in the Blank
12
Chemical Energy
Energy that is stored in the bonds between atoms.
This is a form of potential energy.
Only released when the bonds between atoms are broken.
13
Open Ended
Where is chemical energy stored?
14
Thermal Energy
The total energy of all of the moving particles in a substance.
A form of kinetic energy.
The faster the particles are moving, the more the thermal energy, which means a
higher temperature.
15
Multiple Choice
If the particles in an object are moving faster, the thermal energy is ____.
lower
higher
zero
16
Electromagnetic Energy
Energy that travels in waves through space.
17
Multiple Select
Which of the following are types of electromagnetic energy?
visible light
radio waves
gamma rays
microwaves
18
Sound Energy
Energy that travels in waves, but unlike electromagnetic energy, it cannot travel
through empty space.
19
Open Ended
How are electromagnetic and sound energy different?
20
Nuclear Energy
Energy that is released during nuclear fusion or nuclear fission
21
Fill in the Blank
22
Law of Conservation of Energy
Energy cannot be created or destroyed. It can travel from one place or object to another(transfer), and it can change form (transform).
23
24
Draw
Draw an energy transformation.
25
Poll
How confident do you feel in your understanding of types of energy?
