Questions for students

  • Question: Why does the lid of a tightly closed water bottle sometimes pop off after being left in the freezer?

Answer: When water freezes, it expands, and this can create pressure inside a closed bottle. If the bottle is sealed tightly, the expanding ice can push against the walls of the container, causing the lid to pop off.

  • Question: Have you noticed that water pipes sometimes burst during winter?

Answer: Yes, during winter, the water inside pipes can freeze and expand. Since water expands when it freezes, it puts pressure on the pipe walls, leading to a burst.
