They come towards each other.

The less-dense plate slides under the more dense plate

How do the plates move?

  1. Mountain Chains

  2. Volcanoes

What is formed?

Convergent Boundaries

11

Convergent Boundaries

When a continental plate collides with an oceanic plate, the oceanic plate will sink below the continental plate.

The region where one plate dives beneath another is called a subduction zone.

As one plate is subducted beneath the other, the rock melts under heat and pressure and transforms into magma.

Volcanoes are often found near convergent continental and oceanic plates.

12

When 2 oceanic plates smash into each other, one plate will sink beneath the other plate (creating a subduction zone), and volcanoes will form (some will be underwater volcanoes)

What forms when 2 plates pull away from each other?

underwater mountains

2

seafloor spreading

3

vallys

a big sink hole

15

Divergent Boundary

What is the movement on a divergent boundary?

Deep cracks form in Earth's crust as the plates separate. Called rift zones or rifts (form on continents or in ocean basins)

In the ocean, these rifts form underwater mountain chains (referred to as seafloor spreading)
