Author's last name and date of publication
Why? Connects to your reference page!
Let's Stay Together!
Narrative citation = author's last name in the sentence
Parenthetical citation = all information in parentheses
Correct Language
7
Citations: Basics
Whenever you use a source, you need to include:
author's last name and date of publication
for quotations, provide a page number as well
Citations help readers locate the cited source in the references section of the paper.
8
Use n.d. where you would normally put the date
No Date
Note: Check to see if the author is an organization
Use a shortened version of the title where you'd use the author's last name
For articles or chapters, use quotation marks
No Author
When Information is Missing...
No Title
Put a description of the item in [square brackets] where you'd normally put the title
9
Multiple Choice
Select the statement that is true for APA formatted citations.
If no date is listed, write "n.d." to indicate no date was provided.
If no author is listed, then a citation does not need to be included in your paper.
If you are using an online source, you can just give the URL for the citation.
10
Always list authors in the order they are listed in the source.
Authors
Number of Authors | Narrative Citation | Parenthetical Citation |
|---|---|---|
One author | Walker (2007) | (Walker, 2007) |
Two authors | Walker and Allen (2004) | (Walker & Allen, 2004) |
Three (or more) authors | Bradley, Ramirez, and Soo (1999) | (Bradley et al., 1999) |

OR
Kaplan & Owings (2022) note that helping students develop from a fixed (a person's skills will never change) to a growth (a person can actively work to improve and grow) mindset had the most notable impact on grades and future study in low-performing students, although it also had an impact on high-achieving students.
