Demystifying APA Citations

6

Two Helpful Tips

  • Author's last name and date of publication

    • Why? Connects to your reference page!

Let's Stay Together!

  • Narrative citation = author's last name in the sentence

  • Parenthetical citation = all information in parentheses

Correct Language

7

Citations: Basics

Whenever you use a source, you need to include:

  • author's last name and date of publication

  • for quotations, provide a page number as well

Citations help readers locate the cited source in the references section of the paper.

8

  • Use n.d. where you would normally put the date

No Date

  • Note: Check to see if the author is an organization

  • Use a shortened version of the title where you'd use the author's last name

    • For articles or chapters, use quotation marks

No Author

When Information is Missing...

No Title

  • Put a description of the item in [square brackets] where you'd normally put the title

9

Multiple Choice

Select the statement that is true for APA formatted citations.

1

If no date is listed, write "n.d." to indicate no date was provided.

2

If no author is listed, then a citation does not need to be included in your paper.

3

If you are using an online source, you can just give the URL for the citation.

10

Always list authors in the order they are listed in the source.
