Let's talk about anagrams!

What will we learn today?

Look at the following words and try to identify the similarities between each pair

• study / dusty

• thing / night

• car / arc

What is an anagram?

a word, phrase, or name formed by rearranging the letters of another, such as silent, formed from listen.

Both silent and listen contain the same letters: S, I, T, L, E, N

Let us revisit these three pairs of word. Do you see the similarities now?

• study / dusty

• thing / night

• car / arc

Phrases or Words?

Anagrams do not only need to be words. It can also be used for phrases.

For example:

Dormitory = Dirty room

Here are some other common examples of anagram phrases:

• school master / the classroom

• a gentleman / elegant man

• eleven plus two / twelve plus one

A Famous Anagram

One of the most popular anagrams occur in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, it is revealed that Tom Marvolo Riddle is, in fact, the dreaded Lord Voldemort. The revelation comes in the form of an anagram when the letters of “Tom Marvolo Riddle” rearranged to become “I am Lord Voldemort”.
