What is an anagram?

a word, phrase, or name formed by rearranging the letters of another, such as silent, formed from listen.


Both silent and listen contain the same letters: S, I, T, L, E, N

Let us revisit these three pairs of word. Do you see the similarities now?

Phrases or Words?

Anagrams do not only need to be words. It can also be used for phrases.


For example:

Dormitory = Dirty room

A Famous Anagram

One of the most popular anagrams occur in J. K. Rowling’s Harry Potter series, it is revealed that Tom Marvolo Riddle is, in fact, the dreaded Lord Voldemort. The revelation comes in the form of an anagram when the letters of “Tom Marvolo Riddle” rearranged to become “I am Lord Voldemort”.
